Elumelu Mourns Father-in-Law, Chief Israel Ogbue, at 99, Recalls Role in UBA’s Transformation

By Passman Akpos

Nigerian business leader Tony Elumelu has announced the passing of his father-in-law, Chief Israel C. Ogbue, describing him as a pillar of wisdom, faith, and corporate integrity whose legacy helped shape one of Africa’s most significant banking transformations.

In a heartfelt tribute, Elumelu revealed that Chief Ogbue passed peacefully on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, on his 99th birthday, leaving behind a legacy that spanned decades of leadership in Nigeria’s financial sector and a deep commitment to family and faith.

Elumelu recalled that in January 2005, he led the historic merger between Standard Trust Bank and United Bank for Africa, a consolidation widely regarded as one of the most transformative banking mergers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

According to him, the newly combined institution required experienced and principled leaders to guide its expansion into a pan-African powerhouse. That same year, Chief Ogbue joined the bank’s board as a Non-Executive Director, bringing decades of experience from his leadership roles at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria and NAL Merchant Bank.

Elumelu noted that Chief Ogbue quickly earned the respect of fellow board members for his rare blend of wisdom, steadiness, and integrity.

In 2011, he was appointed Chairman of the bank’s board, serving until 2013. During his tenure, he was credited with strengthening governance structures and reinforcing a culture of accountability and long-term strategic thinking that continues to influence the institution’s operations today.

Beyond his corporate accomplishments, Elumelu described his father-in-law as a deeply spiritual man and devoted family patriarch whose greatest pride was his family.

“My wife, Dr. Awele Elumelu, and I share this loss with profound grief,” Elumelu said, adding that Chief Ogbue’s life “was beautifully lived and stands as a monument that will not crumble.”

Chief Ogbue’s passing has drawn attention across Nigeria’s business and financial circles, where he is remembered for his contributions to corporate governance and the development of the banking sector in Nigeria.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
