Gbaboyor, Others Hits Pause On Tompolo Campaign — But Warns: “Failure To Act Will Trigger Fresh Offensive”

After nearly two years of sustained public confrontation, Niger Delta activist Jude Gbaboyor has announced a temporary seven-day ceasefire in his high-profile media campaign against former militant leader High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, and individuals described as his associates.

The development marks a significant pause in a prolonged dispute that has seen Gbaboyor and other Niger Delta youths use public statements and social media platforms to raise allegations concerning security challenges and unresolved cases in oil-producing communities.

For almost 24 months, Gbaboyor has publicly demanded answers over allegations including kidnapping, missing persons and other security-related concerns which he and his supporters have associated with Tompolo’s wider network.

Among those who have joined the campaign are Apostle Ezekiel Daniel, Mene Edeyibo, Yemi Otuedon, Christopher Sibe and other Niger Delta youths who say they are seeking justice and accountability over issues affecting communities in the region.

Tompolo, a prominent Niger Delta figure who is associated with federal pipeline surveillance operations, has remained at the centre of the allegations. The claims, however, remain allegations and have not by themselves established criminal liability against Tompolo or any individual named by the campaigners.

Why The Seven-Day Truce?

According to statements attributed to Gbaboyor, the decision to suspend the campaign followed interventions by prominent Niger Delta elders, traditional rulers and other regional stakeholders who have reportedly sought to mediate the escalating dispute.

Gbaboyor said the temporary stand-down was granted in good faith to give the intervening leaders an opportunity to convene meetings, examine the allegations and pursue meaningful steps toward resolving outstanding concerns

The activist reportedly stressed that the ceasefire was not a withdrawal of the allegations or abandonment of the campaign’s demands.

Rather, it is being presented as a limited window for community leaders and other stakeholders to demonstrate their willingness and capacity to address the issues raised.

Seven Days To Produce Answers

The most significant question now is what will happen when the seven-day period expires.

Campaign leaders have warned that the truce is conditional and that failure to achieve tangible progress could trigger an immediate resumption of their public campaign.

They are demanding more than meetings or political assurances, insisting on credible investigations, verifiable findings and concrete action concerning the allegations and reported missing-person cases.

Should those expectations not be met within the seven-day window, the activists have indicated that their campaign could return with greater intensity.

Niger Delta Stakeholders Under Pressure

The temporary ceasefire places considerable responsibility on the elders, traditional rulers and other stakeholders who reportedly intervened.

The seven-day period provides an opportunity for the opposing sides to move away from public confrontation and toward a structured process capable of establishing facts, hearing all parties and determining appropriate next steps.

Emergency consultations are expected to focus on the allegations of kidnapping and missing persons, the identities and circumstances surrounding reported cases, and the broader security concerns being raised by communities and youth activists.
