A serving Nigerian Army officer, Colonel I.A. Muhammad, has been killed in a deadly ambush by insurgents linked to Boko Haram following a coordinated overnight assault on a military formation in Monguno.
The incident, which occurred on Sunday night, was disclosed by soldiers currently deployed in Nigeria’s North-East theatre of operations. According to frontline sources, the senior officer died while courageously leading a reinforcement mission to repel terrorists attacking a Forward Operating Base (FOB) under the 242 Battalion.
Ambush Turns Deadly
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the insurgents launched a fierce attack targeting the FOB located within the Monguno axis, a strategic military hub in Borno State. The base falls under Sector 3 of the ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
A soldier, speaking under anonymity, described the moment tragedy struck:
“One of our senior commanders, Colonel I.A. Muhammad, was killed last night when Boko Haram attacked Monguno. They also killed some soldiers during the attack.”
Sources said the Colonel swiftly mobilised troops after receiving distress calls from soldiers under heavy fire at the FOB.
A Mission That Ended in Tragedy
Determined to rescue his men, Colonel Muhammad reportedly led a convoy towards the embattled location. However, unknown to them, insurgents had already laid a deadly trap.
While advancing, the convoy drove into a carefully planned ambush involving a remotely detonated improvised explosive device (IED).
“He was on his way to support his men when Boko Haram fighters ambushed them with a controlled landmine. It was detonated at the exact moment his vehicle approached,” another source disclosed.
The explosion killed the Colonel instantly, along with an unspecified number of soldiers accompanying him.

Military insiders say the attack underscores the increasing sophistication of insurgent tactics, particularly the use of remotely triggered explosives, which are proving more lethal and difficult to detect.
