North Korea resumed its trash-filled balloon throwing at South Korea on Thursday, with 20 such balloons crossing into the South, South Korea’s military said, according to the Yonhap news agency.
In the greater Seoul area, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said it discovered 10 trash bundles with propaganda leaflets from the latest launch, the agency reported.
No hazardous substances were found following an analysis.
The latest launch came after Kim Yo Jong, the sister of Kim Jong Un, North Korea’s autocratic leader, claimed on Tuesday that Pyongyang had discovered and removed “political motivational rubbish’’ sent from South Korea.
Pyongyang started launching thousands of trash-filled balloons in late May in retaliation for anti-North Korea propaganda leaflets sent to the North by South Korean activists.
The last launch of such balloons was on Saturday.
In response to the North’s balloons, the South Korean military has been blaring anti-North Korean propaganda broadcasts through loudspeakers along the border daily since July.
But the military has refrained from shooting down the balloons, citing safety concerns.
