A fresh wave of political debate has erupted in Delta Central following two high-profile appearances by Ede Dafinone and Ovie Omo-Agege, with supporters on both sides urging the public to “be the judge” of who commands genuine grassroots support.
The controversy stems from contrasting narratives around recent gatherings held by the two Urhobo political figures within the same week. Allies of Dafinone described his event—reportedly held at a primary school field—as a well-attended declaration backed by state structures and party machinery. They argue that the large turnout reflects growing acceptance of his leadership within the ruling political establishment.
However, supporters of Omo-Agege have dismissed that claim, alleging that the crowd was largely “mobilized” and not organic. In contrast, they point to Omo-Agege’s homecoming event as evidence of spontaneous public support, insisting that attendees showed up voluntarily without government or party coercion.
Beyond crowd size, the debate has expanded into broader political accusations and counter-accusations. Some voices in the camp of Omo-Agege have rejected claims that he worked against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 elections, arguing instead that his continued political relevance and influence contradict such allegations.
The discourse has also revisited legislative performance and political history. Supporters of Omo-Agege highlight his journey from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC), portraying him as a resilient figure who navigated opposition politics before rising to national prominence. They question whether first-term lawmakers like Dafinone have matched that level of impact.
On the other hand, critics argue that Omo-Agege’s decision to return to the Senate race raises questions about political progression, with some likening it to “going backwards” rather than advancing to higher office.
Tensions were further heightened by unverified claims circulating online about alleged monetary inducements at political events and disputes among attendees. While such allegations remain unconfirmed, they have fueled skepticism among observers about the authenticity of political mobilization in the state.
Amid the heated exchanges, analysts say the unfolding narrative reflects deeper divisions within Delta APC and the Urhobo political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections. Questions around loyalty, performance, and grassroots appeal are likely to shape the contest for both party tickets and voter support.
For now, the verdict remains in the court of public opinion—as supporters on both sides continue to insist: the people should be the judge.
