A storm of controversy has erupted online after Tarakirivoice, a news-focused Facebook page, was hit with a 72-hour posting ban shortly after publishing a critical report about electricity shortages and governance issues in Bayelsa State.
The restriction has sparked accusations that social media reporting tools are being weaponized by political supporters to silence criticism, raising fresh concerns about digital press freedom in Nigeria.
According to the page administrator, Facebook imposed the ban after claiming that a post from the page violated its policy on explicit content involving minors. However, the publisher strongly denies the allegation, insisting that Tarakirivoice publishes strictly news reports and commentary and has never shared such material.
The administrator suspects the restriction may have been triggered by coordinated mass reporting from supporters angered by a recent Tarakirivoice story criticizing the performance of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri.
Story That Sparked the Backlash
The controversial report, published by Tarakirivoice under the headline “Elebele Turbines or Empty Talk? Anger Boils as Bayelsans Sweat in Darkness Months After Douye Diri’s Promise,” highlighted the frustration of residents over the state’s lingering electricity crisis.
The story centered on the emotional account of a Bayelsa resident, Jennifer Ebiemi Livinus, whose complaint about prolonged darkness quickly went viral on social media.
Livinus described how residents are forced to adopt extreme alternatives due to lack of electricity.
“At this point I want to conclude that out of the 36 states, Bayelsa is the worst of them all,” she lamented. “I’m using gas to iron and sweating furiously. I can’t remember when last I saw electricity to pump water.”
Her remarks reignited debate about Governor Diri’s earlier pledge that Bayelsa would enjoy 24-hour uninterrupted electricity by December 2025 following the installation of 60-megawatt turbines in Elebele.
Months after the promised deadline, many residents say little has changed, with communities still struggling with erratic or nonexistent power supply.
Budget Questions Fuel Debate
The Tarakirivoice editorial also raised questions about spending priorities in the state’s 2026 budget, citing reports that ₦12.7 billion was allocated for ceremonial materials and events across ministries and agencies.
The report further highlighted claims that ₦401 million was budgeted for international medical expenses while only ₦5.5 million was allocated for capital projects at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital.
Critics argue the contrast has intensified public anger, especially among residents dealing daily with electricity shortages, water problems, and rising living costs.
Allegations of Coordinated Reporting
Media observers say the timing of the Facebook restriction — coming shortly after the publication of the story — has raised suspicions that organized mass reporting campaigns may have been used to trigger the platform’s moderation system.
Digital rights advocates warn that such tactics can undermine independent journalism, especially when reporting tools are exploited to silence critical reporting.
“Reporting systems are meant to protect users from harmful content,” one media analyst said. “But when they are manipulated by organized groups to shut down news pages, it becomes a serious threat to freedom of expression.”Calls for Facebook Investigation
Observers are now urging Facebook’s parent company Meta Platforms to review the case and ensure that legitimate news publishers are not unfairly penalized due to coordinated reporting campaigns.
