A fierce political and intellectual storm has erupted within Ijaw political circles following explosive allegations and counter-allegations targeting the former President of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), Benjamin Ogele Okaba, with critics accusing him of betrayal, while supporters defend his legacy and condemn personal attacks.

The controversy was triggered by a strongly worded post from commentator Wisdom Oniekpar Ikuli, who described Prof. Okaba as “a disgrace to the Ijaw Nation,” alleging he betrayed the ethnic group “for peanuts and crumbs.” Ikuli also questioned the integrity of electoral processes involving academics in national politics, suggesting that some university professors have compromised credibility in public service roles.

The remarks quickly ignited widespread backlash and support across social media platforms, drawing in multiple voices from within the Ijaw political and intellectual space.
