UNILORIN student commits suicide

A 200-level student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) in Kwara State has committed suicide over economic hardship in the country.

The male student, whose identity had yet to be confirmed as of press time, was of the Department of Mass Communication in the Faculty of Communication and Information Sciences (CIS).

Reports said that the student committed suicide in his private residence located at Oke-Odo axis of Tanke in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.

The deceased reportedly committed suicide due to financial challenges.

The deceased lost his father a few years ago, while his mother, a retired school teacher, had since taken over financial responsibility for his academics.

The deceased’s financial crisis reportedly started when he resumed school last year.

The development was said to have made his colleagues to raise some funds to pay his tuition fees and buy food items for him.

However, it was gathered that the deceased decided to take a poisonous substance last weekend, just after his roommate had left for lectures, leaving a note for his roommate which stated his inability to cope with his financial situation as a reason for committing suicide.

His roommate raised the alarm on the incident when he returned from lectures.

A senior administrative officer in UNILORIN confirmed the incident to journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.

The UNILORIN official described the incident as shocking.
