Yenagoa, Bayelsa State — The push to deliver the long-anticipated Agge Deep Seaport has gathered fresh momentum, but as government intensifies action, a bigger question is beginning to dominate public conversation: will the project truly transform Bayelsa’s economy—or end up as another costly, abandoned dream?
The Bayelsa State Government has stepped up efforts to actualise the seaport, convening a high-level stakeholders’ meeting at the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in Yenagoa. The meeting brought together transaction advisors, technical experts, and key government officials to align strategies and fast-track the development process.
This was immediately followed by a strategic visit to Agge in Ekeremor Local Government Area, where the project team carried out an on-the-spot assessment of the terrain and environmental conditions—an exercise seen as critical to moving the project from paper to reality.
Leading the government’s charge, the Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Faith Izibenua Zibs-Godwin, described the engagement as a major step toward execution. She reaffirmed that the Agge Deep Seaport remains a flagship project with the potential to reshape the state’s economic future.
According to her, the seaport is central to Bayelsa’s “blue economy” vision—an ambitious plan to diversify away from oil dependence and unlock wealth from marine resources, trade, and logistics. She stressed that government would provide the necessary support and coordination to ensure the project does not stall.
On the technical side, Transaction Advisory Team lead, Tomiwa Aregbesola, said the site visit marked a crucial phase in understanding the realities on ground. He noted that the findings would guide planning decisions as the project moves into its detailed development stage.
Aregbesola expressed confidence in the level of groundwork already completed, describing it as a sign that the state is serious. He also pointed to Agge’s natural advantages, while calling for stronger collaboration between federal and state institutions to avoid delays that have plagued similar mega projects across the country.
At the grassroots, Chairman of Ekeremor Local Government Area, Onniye Isaac, alongside traditional rulers, pledged full support for the project. They assured government and investors of a peaceful environment and readiness to partner in ensuring smooth implementation.
Despite the optimism from officials, concerns are beginning to surface among observers and residents. Questions around funding, timelines, transparency, and long-term sustainability are already being raised, especially in a region where several large-scale projects have either stalled or failed to deliver promised benefits.
Analysts say the stakes are high. If successfully executed, the Agge Deep Seaport could open new trade corridors, attract foreign investment, create jobs, and position Bayelsa as a major player in Nigeria’s maritime economy. But if mismanaged, it risks joining the growing list of “white elephant” projects—ambitious on paper but ineffective in reality.
With technical teams now on ground and planning advancing, the spotlight is firmly on the Bayelsa State Government to turn promises into tangible results.
For many Bayelsans, the message is clear: this project must not become another headline—it must become a working reality.
