Alleged Assault Scandal Rocks Ahoada West Local Government Area as Eugene Chita Epelle Faces Backlash Over Winnie Miller’s School Advocacy in Rivers State

Tension is rising in Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State following allegations of intimidation and assault linked to a social media campaign calling for urgent renovation of a community secondary school in Odiokwu.
The controversy began after community advocate Winnie Miller published a series of emotional posts highlighting the poor state of Community Secondary School Odiokwu, describing inadequate classrooms, lack of chairs, poor roofing, and insufficient teachers.
According to her posts, the school serves students from several neighboring communities including Awanugbokor, Oyigba, Ihuachi, and Ubeta, making it the primary access point for secondary education across the Ubie area.
In one of her appeals, Miller called on the Executive Chairman of the council, Eugene Chita Epelle, to intervene urgently.
“Sir, you are not just the Chairman; you are a proud son of Odiokwu… This is the moment to lead from the front,” she wrote, emphasizing that the appeal was not political but focused on securing a better learning environment for children.
She also urged the Rivers State Ministry of Education and community stakeholders to support rehabilitation efforts, stressing that “education is a right, not a privilege.”
Allegations of Intimidation Spark Public Reaction
However, the situation escalated after social media posts circulated alleging that the council chairman reacted negatively to the criticism. Some commentators claimed that Miller was intimidated and assaulted by individuals allegedly linked to the chairman after her advocacy posts went viral.
These claims have not yet been independently verified.
Several activists and community voices have since called on the Nigeria Police Force to investigate the allegations, urging the Commissioner of Police in the state to ensure transparency and accountability.
Civil society supporters also appealed to FIDA Nigeria (Rivers State branch) to monitor the situation, citing concerns about alleged harassment and the protection of women’s rights.
Community Divided Over School Advocacy
Screenshots of Miller’s earlier posts show repeated appeals for intervention rather than direct criticism of political leaders. In multiple entries, she described herself as “a proud daughter of Odiokwu” and encouraged youths to collaborate on community development projects.
Supporters argue that her campaign focused solely on improving educational infrastructure, while critics insist that discussions surrounding the matter should include full details of any private engagements between the parties involved.
Meanwhile, residents continue to express concern about the deteriorating condition of the school facilities and the impact on students’ learning outcomes.
Calls for Government InterventionEducation stakeholders say the situation highlights broader challenges facing rural schools across Rivers State, including infrastructure gaps and teacher shortages.
Observers note that the controversy has shifted public attention back to the urgent need for government and community collaboration to restore dignity to public education in underserved areas.
