New Police Era Begins as Disu Secures Unanimous Council Backing

Nigeria Police Council Confirms Tunji Disu as New IGP, Tinubu to Swear Him In WednesdayThe Nigeria Police Council has unanimously ratified the appointment of Olatunji Rilwan Disu as the new Inspector-General of Police, clearing the way for his formal swearing-in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday.
According to a State House press statement issued on Monday, the swearing-in ceremony will take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting scheduled for the same day.
The council meeting, held at the Presidential Villa, was presided over by Tinubu and attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, Hashimu Argungu.
Other top government officials present included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs Ibrahim Gaidam; Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike; and Head of Service Esther Didi Walson-Jack.
Disu’s appointment follows the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, prompting swift action by the presidency and the council to ensure continuity in the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State praised Disu’s track record, particularly his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad between 2015 and 2021, noting that his leadership earned the unit recognition for excellence in crime control.
Similarly, Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State described the appointment as merit-based, citing Disu’s strong professional credentials and operational experience.
Wike also commended the new police chief’s performance during his service in Rivers State, where he worked as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and led the anti-kidnapping unit. Disu later served as Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory command when Wike assumed office as minister.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State formally seconded the motion endorsing the appointment.
Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. Over the years, he has built a career spanning operational policing, investigations, and strategic command roles across the country, with academic and professional certifications in public administration, criminology, forensic investigation, legal psychology, security studies, and entrepreneurship.
Before his elevation, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Special Protection Unit and the Force CID Annex, Lagos.
