Judicial Comfort vs Public Suffering: Wike’s Abuja Inspections Stir Controversy

Abuja—The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s judiciary through improved infrastructure and welfare, following the inspection of several high-priority judicial projects across the FCT.
In continuation of ongoing project assessments, Wike inspected the construction of the Court of Appeal Office Complex in Dakibiyu, the Judges’ Quarters in Katampe, and exclusive residential accommodations for Heads of Courts in Asokoro. The projects, he said, align directly with the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to provide a secure and enabling environment for judicial officers.
“Judges’ environment is directly tied to their efficiency and safety,” Wike stated. “We can’t talk about democracy without talking about the judiciary. And we can’t talk about judges doing their work effectively when they do not have befitting places to live or work. Therefore, it is our duty, as directed by Mr President, to provide befitting accommodation and offices for our judicial officers.”
The minister stressed that the independence and effectiveness of the judiciary remain fundamental to Nigeria’s democratic stability, adding that welfare provisions for judges are not privileges but necessities for national progress.
While many Nigerians have applauded the pace and scale of the projects, describing Wike as a politician known for delivering visible infrastructure, the development has also ignited wider public conversations about equity in government welfare policies.
Some citizens have urged the Federal Government to extend similar interventions to other critical sectors, including teachers, medical workers, military personnel, police officers, farmers, and people living with disabilities (PLWDs). According to them, while the judiciary deserves adequate support as one of the three arms of government, it represents only a fraction of the workforce required to build and sustain a functional society.
“You can say Wike has his bad sides, but one inevitable truth is that no Nigerian politician builds structures and projects like Nyesom Wike,” a resident said. “This is commendable, but teachers, doctors, soldiers, and police officers who put their lives on the line daily should not be left out.”
Others specifically called on the FCT Administration to consider initiating a comprehensive staff housing scheme for FCTA workers, particularly those under the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). Suggestions included developing at least 1,000 housing units in each of the six area councils to cushion the rising cost of accommodation for public servants.
There were also questions about the scope of ongoing inspections, with residents asking how many hospitals, schools, public utilities, waste management facilities, security posts, factories under public-private partnerships, and youth or sports development centres have received similar attention.
Despite the calls for broader inclusion, many observers agree that the inspection of judicial projects marks a significant step toward institutional strengthening in the FCT. They expressed hope that the same momentum would be replicated across other sectors critical to national development.
As the projects progress, expectations remain high that the FCT Administration will balance its focus—ensuring that while the judiciary is properly catered for, other frontline workers who keep the nation running are not forgotten.
