Prominent Bayelsa Community Leader, HRH Dickson N. Okpokunoun, Dies at 75

The Bini family of Akpolo-wari in Egbemo Angalabiri community, located in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, has formally announced the passing of their patriarch, His Highness Late Dickson N. Okpokunoun, revered as The Akubra I of Tunuama Community.

According to the family statement, the respected traditional figure “slept in the Lord” on October 27, 2025, at the age of 75. The late Okpokunoun is remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and community leader whose influence extended across Egbemo Angalabiri and neighboring communities.He is survived by two wives, children, grandchildren, brothers, cousins, and many relatives and associates whose lives he touched throughout his lifetime.

Burial Arrangements Announced

The family released a detailed schedule of burial activities beginning with a Service of Songs on Friday, February 20, 2026, at his residence located at No. 37 Dickson Close, Ebis Road, Biogbolo in Yenagoa. The service is scheduled to begin at 4:00 pm.

On Friday, February 27, 2026, the body will depart from the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri, for his hometown in Egbemo Angalabiri community, where chiefs and elders of the Akpolo-wari will formally receive the remains.

The funeral service will be conducted by Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel) at 12:00 noon, followed by a traditional wake-keep beginning at 6:00 pm till dawn.

Family representatives, including Elder Ezekiel Okpokunoun and Ebitimi Dickson, signed the announcement on behalf of the extended family and children.

The late monarch’s passing marks the end of an era for the Tunuama Community, where he was widely regarded as a symbol of unity, cultural preservation, and leadership. Community members are expected to gather in large numbers to honor his legacy during the burial rites.
