The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally affirmed former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its presidential flag bearer for the 2027 general election, while also unveiling former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, as his running mate.
The affirmation took place during the party’s Special National Convention, where delegates unanimously adopted a resolution endorsing Obi as the party’s candidate ahead of the next presidential election.
Speaking after the convention, former Bayelsa State Governor and senior party leader, Seriake Dickson, described the event as a significant moment for the party and the country.
According to Dickson, he was honoured to present the party’s flag to Obi alongside the National Chairman and other leaders of the NDC, noting that the endorsement reflected the confidence and trust reposed in the party by its members and millions of Nigerians.
The convention reached another high point when Obi, while accepting the nomination, announced Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 presidential race. The announcement was greeted with loud cheers and enthusiasm from delegates, party officials, and supporters who viewed the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket as a symbol of national unity and inclusiveness.
Party stakeholders described the alliance as a strategic partnership aimed at building a broad-based coalition capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic, security, and governance challenges.
Congratulating both candidates, Dickson pledged the full support of the party’s leadership, members, and stakeholders, expressing confidence that the duo would lead the NDC into a competitive and successful campaign.
He also commended delegates and party officials for what he described as a peaceful, transparent, and democratic convention process, urging members to remain united and focused on the party’s vision.
Dickson said the NDC was determined to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative leadership platform and promised that the party would continue to champion policies aimed at national renewal, economic progress, and sustainable development.
The convention concluded with party leaders calling for unity among members as preparations begin for the 2027 presidential election.
