A prominent voice within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Comrade Gboluseri Timipre Samuel, has issued a strongly worded statement urging Nigerians to confront what he describes as a deepening crisis in governance and democratic values across the country.
In a message titled “A Nation at the Crossroads: Our Future Demands Courage, Not Silence,” Samuel painted a picture of a nation rich in potential but weighed down by years of what he called “failed leadership driven by power rather than service.”
He stressed that Nigeria remains a country endowed with vast human and natural resources, capable of achieving global admiration under the right leadership. However, he argued that current realities—ranging from economic hardship to insecurity—reflect a disconnect between leadership and the needs of the people.
According to him, the country is witnessing not just poor governance but a “gradual silencing of democracy,” where institutions meant to protect citizens are allegedly being used to suppress dissent and weaken opposition voices.
Samuel highlighted several pressing challenges facing Nigerians, including rising fuel costs, unemployment, inflation, unreliable electricity, deteriorating healthcare systems, and growing insecurity. He criticized what he described as a lack of empathy from leaders, accusing them of prioritizing personal comfort and political ambitions over national welfare.
“While citizens struggle daily, leaders travel abroad for medical care and focus on political maneuvering even in times of national grief,” he said, calling the situation “abandonment rather than leadership.”
The NDC figure also raised concerns about the future, warning that continued suppression of citizens’ voices and concentration of power among a few could leave future generations with a “broken system” and limited opportunities.
He posed critical questions to Nigerians about trust in governance, transparency, and the credibility of political institutions, urging citizens to reflect on the direction of the country.
Framing the moment as one of urgency, Samuel emphasized that the current situation goes beyond politics and touches on survival, dignity, and national identity.
He presented the NDC as an alternative platform, advocating for what he described as true democratic values, a functional multi-party system, and leadership focused on service rather than control.
“This is not just another political movement,” he said. “It is a call to reclaim our future.”The statement concluded with a call for active civic engagement, urging Nigerians to reject silence, fear, and indifference, and to make deliberate choices that would shape the nation’s future.
As political tensions and public dissatisfaction continue to rise, Samuel’s remarks add to the growing chorus of voices demanding accountability, reform, and a redefinition of leadership in Nigeria.
