Israel conducted overnight strikes on military objects, including radars and detection assets, in southern Syria, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said on Tuesday.
“Overnight, IAF Israeli Air Forces fighter jets struck radars and detection assets used for constructing aerial intelligence assessments in southern Syria.
“In addition, command positions and military sites containing weapons and military equipment belonging to the Syrian Regime in southern Syria were struck,’’ IDF said.
IDF said that this infrastructure threatened Israel and was destroyed in order to prevent future threats.
Syria’s armed opposition captured Damascus on Dec. 8.
Bashar Assad stepped down as Syrian president and left the country for Russia, where he was granted asylum.
Mohammed al-Bashir, who ran the Idlib-based administration formed by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham and other opposition groups, was named interim prime minister.
He later announced that an interim government had been formed and would remain in place until March 2025.
Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said in early December that the agreement on the disengagement of forces with Syria in the Golan Heights, reached shortly after the Yom Kippur War of 1973.
That this was no longer valid, since the Syrian military had left their positions after the collapse of Assad’s government.
The prime minister ordered the Israeli army to occupy the demarcation zone and the positions that control it.
Defence Minister Israel Katz, in turn, gave the order to army units to prepare for wintering in the Syrian part of the Golan Heights.
The Golan Heights were part of Syria until Israeli troops occupied the territory during the 1967 Six-Day War.
Israel and Syria had agreed on a truce and the separation of forces in 1973.
In 1974, UN peacekeeping posts appeared in the Golan Heights.
