US President Donald Trump has harangued former President Joe Biden as “an embarrassment” to the United States and alleged that he mismanaged the conflict in Ukraine.
Trump indirectly accused Biden of allowing people to die in the conflict, which, according to him, should have ended a long time ago.
In his latest interview, Trump claimed to have discussed the Ukraine issue with the Russian president over the phone, although the Kremlin has yet to confirm whether any conversation between the two leaders took place.
Trump said he has a concrete plan to end the conflict: “I hope it’s fast. Every day people are dying,” he said.
He blamed Biden and insisted the war “never would have happened” if he had been president in 2022. “I always had a good relationship with Putin,” he said, adding, “Biden was an embarrassment to our nation. A complete embarrassment.”
Despite his reputation for being unpredictable, Trump said he wants to end the conflict and prevent further bloodshed.
He called the US government’s decision to allow Ukraine to use its long-range missiles a “stupid decision.”
In January, Trump also stated that he “could understand” Russia’s firm opposition to Ukraine’s NATO membership.
The remarks drew praise from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who noted that “for the first time, the problem of NATO was identified as something that the United States is ready to discuss seriously.”
Without specifics from the Trump administration regarding a potential resolution for Ukraine, reports suggest that the US government could propose freezing the conflict along the current front line, deploying European peacekeepers, and suspending Ukraine’s NATO accession.
However, Russia has outrightly rejected any such offers, particularly freezing the conflict and deploying EU peacekeepers. It warned that any such deployment would result in catastrophic consequences for EU troops on the ground.
Furthermore, Moscow insists that Kiev must commit to permanent neutrality, demilitarisation, and denazification, as well as recognise the “territorial realities on the ground.”
