Kunemofa Asu’s Ph.D. Milestone Amid 28-Year Marriage Collapse: Asu Ekiye Says “I Didn’t Initiate Divorce”
.........As He Clarifies Divorce, Says Estranged Wife Initiated Separation After 28-Year Marriage

By Passman Akpos
Gospel musician and Niger Delta Christian music figure, Asu Ekiye, has offered a fresh clarification on the dissolution of his 28-year marriage to Dr. Kunemofa Asu, saying he did not initiate the divorce and spent about a year making efforts to save the relationship.
Ekiye made the clarification following public reactions and questions generated by reports surrounding the end of his long-standing marriage.
In a statement titled “Point of Clarification — Divorce Update,” Ekiye said his estranged wife was the one who expressed the desire to end the marriage, subsequently moved out of their home and instituted divorce proceedings.
According to him, the decision was not preceded by quarrels, but followed his wife’s expressed desire to bring the marriage to an end.
«“The decision regarding the dissolution of my marriage was not one I initiated. My wife expressed her desire to end the marriage, packed out of my house and subsequently instituted divorce proceedings without any quarrels.”»
Ekiye further disclosed that for approximately one year after the separation, he made what he described as every reasonable effort to reconcile with his wife and preserve the marriage.
He said he appealed to her in various ways, hoping that the relationship could still be restored, but his efforts ultimately failed because she remained firm in her decision.
«“For about a year thereafter, I made every reasonable effort, and appealed to her in every way I could, hoping that we could reconsider and preserve the marriage.”»
The gospel artiste said that after exhausting his efforts toward reconciliation, he eventually accepted the reality of the situation and allowed the divorce process to proceed.
He stressed that his decision to speak was not motivated by bitterness or a desire to attack anyone, but simply to correct what he considered possible misconceptions surrounding the circumstances of the divorce.
«“I bear no bitterness or ill will toward anyone.”»
Ekiye said he was choosing to approach the next phase of his life with “grace, dignity, maturity and respect for all concerned.”
Clarification Follows Public Questions Over 28-Year Marriage
The latest statement comes after Tarakirivoice reported comments attributed to Pastor Omoni Ebikefe Fidelis, who publicly questioned Ekiye’s decision to end a marriage that had lasted 28 years.
Fidelis had described the development as serious and suggested that Ekiye might have made what he called the “greatest mistake” of his life by allowing the marriage to end.
The cleric also questioned why Ekiye had not initially publicly explained the circumstances surrounding the breakdown of the marriage.
Fidelis raised several possibilities regarding what could have led to the separation, including adultery, but did not provide evidence that such conduct occurred.
Tarakirivoice had previously noted that any allegation of adultery or other misconduct remained unsubstantiated unless supported by evidence or confirmed by the parties involved.
Ekiye’s latest clarification now provides additional information about his account of how the divorce process began.
“I Did All I Could To Seek Reconciliation”
The musician’s statement suggests that reconciliation was attempted before he eventually accepted the dissolution of the marriage.
Rather than presenting the divorce as a decision jointly initiated by both parties, Ekiye’s account places the initial decision to end the relationship with his estranged wife.
His statement also indicates that he deliberately refrained from publicly discussing the details of the marital breakdown for an extended period.
The clarification comes amid renewed public interest in the former couple, particularly because of the length of their marriage and their prominence within Niger Delta Christian circles.
Dr. Kunemofa Asu Marks Academic Milestone
The renewed attention around the marriage also coincides with public recognition of Dr. Kunemofa Asu’s recent academic achievement.
A congratulatory message circulating publicly describes Kunemofa Asu as the Director of Finance and Accounts at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and congratulates her on the conferment of a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Disaster Risk Management by the University of Port Harcourt on June 6, 2026.
The message praised her professional career, academic advancement and public service, describing the achievement as a demonstration of dedication, resilience and continued learning.
It also identified her with the credentials FCNA and FSM, while celebrating her role in finance, governance and regional development.
The congratulatory message was published “In Line With Dr Samuel Ogbuku.”
A New Chapter
While Ekiye’s clarification may answer some of the questions surrounding who initiated the divorce process, he has not disclosed private details of the marriage beyond what he considers necessary to set the record straight.
His decision to avoid public accusations against his estranged wife also appears consistent with his stated desire to move forward without bitterness.
After 28 years of marriage, Ekiye says he has now accepted the situation and is choosing to enter the next chapter of his life with dignity and respect.
The development is likely to continue attracting reactions from admirers, members of the Niger Delta gospel community and the wider public, given the couple’s long marital history.
For now, Ekiye’s position is clear: he says the decision to end the marriage was initiated by his wife, that he spent about a year seeking reconciliation, and that he ultimately accepted the divorce after those efforts failed.
Tarakirivoice reports that the account above reflects Ekiye’s personal clarification, while private circumstances surrounding the marriage remain matters primarily for the parties involved.
