“Manufactured Loyalty? Tompolo Linked to Alleged ‘Cash-for-Crowd’ Welcome for Tinubu”

By Paul Ebi

London, United Kingdom — A fresh controversy has erupted following the recent London reception held for Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as conflicting narratives emerge over the authenticity of the crowd that welcomed him.

The event, earlier reported as a show of solidarity by supporters of Niger Delta figure Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, is now being questioned amid viral claims that many of the attendees were allegedly paid to pose as loyalists.

According to circulating social media posts and videos, individuals were reportedly offered as much as £500 per day to stand along the streets in London and simulate support for the President. The claims further allege that some of those mobilized were not genuine supporters of Tinubu but individuals sympathetic to Labour Party’s Peter Obi.

The allegations have triggered intense debate across Nigeria’s political space, with critics questioning the legitimacy of the show of support and linking the alleged payments to broader concerns about public spending and accountability. Some commentators have gone as far as tying the claims to ongoing scrutiny surrounding multi-billion naira pipeline surveillance contracts in the Niger Delta.

However, supporters of the administration and organizers of the London gathering have pushed back strongly, dismissing the accusations as baseless and politically motivated. They argue that political mobilization—especially within diaspora communities—often involves logistics and coordination that require funding, and does not necessarily imply deception.

Several voices also challenged the credibility of the claims, noting inconsistencies in the accusations and questioning why those allegedly “paid” would openly identify as supporters of opposing political figures.

The controversy has also drawn in comparisons to past election cycles, with references to the 2023 presidential race involving Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, where similar allegations of staged support occasionally surfaced.

Political analysts say the situation reflects a deeper issue within Nigeria’s democratic culture—where optics, perception, and propaganda increasingly shape public discourse. They note that in an era dominated by social media, unverified claims can quickly gain traction and influence public opinion, regardless of their accuracy.

Amid the heated exchanges, some Nigerians have shifted focus to governance outcomes, arguing that any political “mandate” should ultimately be measured by tangible improvements in citizens’ lives—such as economic stability, security, and cost of living.

As the debate rages on, neither the presidency nor representatives of Tompolo have issued any formal response to the specific allegations of paid supporters at the time of filing this report.

The London episode now stands as yet another flashpoint in Nigeria’s deeply polarized political environment, where loyalty, legitimacy, and public trust continue to be fiercely contested.
