Military Base Falls Again: Terrorists Burn Tanks, Kill Troops, Vanish With Weapons

By Passman Akpos

Suspected fighters of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) on Friday launched a deadly attack on a Nigerian Army outpost in Jakana, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, killing an unconfirmed number of soldiers and carting away large quantities of arms and ammunition.

Military sources told SaharaReporters that the insurgents stormed Jakana community in the early hours of Friday, firing indiscriminately before turning their assault on the military facility with explosives.

According to the sources, the attackers arrived in several groups and were too many to count. The intensity of the assault reportedly forced some soldiers to flee into nearby bushes, while many others were killed during the raid.

“An attack occurred this morning, 06/02/2025, at an Army outpost along Maiduguri/Damaturu Road, Jakana town, by Boko Haram terrorists, with many casualties recorded on our side. Their corpses have been transferred to 7 Division Military Hospital in Maiduguri,” a senior military source disclosed

The source added that the insurgents set armoured tanks and other military vehicles ablaze and escaped with unquantifiable amounts of ammunition after overpowering the base. The latest attack comes just days after another deadly assault on a military base in Sabon Gari, Damboa Local Government Area, where several soldiers were also killed.

Earlier, on January 26, 2025, at least seven military personnel, including a newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel, Mohammed, were killed in an ambush while travelling from Maiduguri to Damasak in Mobbar Local Government Area. Military sources said the troops came under heavy gunfire and explosive attacks by insurgents during the ambush.

Beyond the confirmed fatalities, several soldiers were reportedly seriously injured, while an unspecified number of personnel remain missing following the series of attacks.

Since the death of Boko Haram’s former leader, Abubakar Shekau, ISWAP has steadily consolidated control around parts of the Lake Chad region, absorbing hundreds of defecting fighters from Shekau’s faction and intensifying attacks on military targets.

Despite repeated claims by the Nigerian Army that the insurgency has been largely defeated, militant groups continue to carry out coordinated assaults, often inflicting heavy casualties on security forces.

The decade-long conflict has so far claimed over 100,000 lives and displaced millions of people, particularly across Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe states, making it one of the deadliest insurgencies in Africa.
