“Promise Broken, Power Unleashed? Gloria Diri Accused as VDM Steps In to Rescue Abandoned Student”

By Passman Akpos

Tension in Bayelsa State has intensified following fresh allegations against the First Lady, Gloria Diri, over an alleged unfulfilled scholarship promise and claims of abuse of power linked to the detention of activist Livinus Odinakachukwu Nwosu.

The controversy took a new turn after social media personality Martins Vincent Otse publicly accused the First Lady of abandoning a commitment to sponsor a student, Nancy Wilfred, through university education. In a strongly worded statement circulating online, Otse alleged that Nwosu was targeted and detained after calling attention to the unfulfilled promise.

“Release Livinus now—we don’t want your scholarship anymore,” Otse declared, further pledging to personally fund the student’s education to university level.

Background to the Crisis

The latest claims come amid an already heated situation following the remand of Nwosu, who is currently being held at the Okaka Correctional Centre for 30 days.

Nwosu had earlier alleged that he was invited by the Nigeria Police Force under the pretense of a routine meeting with the Commissioner of Police, only to be taken directly to court without prior notice or adequate time to prepare his defense.

“I was told to come see the CP this morning, only for them to drag me to court without proper preparation,” he reportedly said before his remand.

Authorities, however, argued in court that the activist posed a potential security risk, accusing him of planning to mobilize members of his “Ratel” movement to disrupt public order. The court subsequently granted a 30-day remand order.

Scholarship Allegation Sparks New Wave of Reactions

The introduction of the scholarship controversy has further inflamed public sentiment, with many Nigerians questioning whether the activist’s detention is to his criticism of the First Lady.

Supporters of Nwosu insist that his actions were limited to demanding accountability over the alleged promise made to Nancy Wilfred, and argue that his detention represents a broader attempt to silence dissent.

On social media, reactions have been swift and divided. While some users condemned what they described as “state-backed intimidation,” others cautioned against drawing conclusions without official statements from authorities.

Growing Demands for Accountability

Civil society voices and online commentators are now calling for transparency from both the Bayelsa State Government and the police regarding:

The circumstances surrounding Nwosu’s arrest and court appearance

The legal basis for his continued detention

Clarification on the alleged scholarship promise

Legal analysts note that if due process was not followed, Nwosu’s legal team could challenge the remand order in a higher court.

Silence from Authorities

As of the time of this report, neither the office of the First Lady nor the Bayelsa State Police Command has issued an official response to the latest allegations.

Meanwhile, the case continues to generate widespread debate across Nigeria, raising broader concerns about civil liberties, the role of activism, and the use of state institutions in handling dissent.

With public pressure mounting and new claims emerging, attention is now firmly fixed on how authorities in Bayelsa State will respond in the coming days.
