“Sacrilege or Revelation? Pastor Says God Has Tattoos, Shatters Long-Held Church Beliefs”

By Passman Akpos

Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo has ignited widespread debate across social media after claiming that tattoos are supported by biblical scripture, following remarks he made during a recent live broadcast.

Speaking to his audience, the popular Nigerian pastor argued that the Bible symbolically portrays God as bearing tattoos, citing Isaiah 49:16 to support his position. The verse reads, “Behold, I have engraved thee upon the palms of my hands,” which Pastor Okonkwo interpreted as a form of divine tattoo.

“God himself has tattooed you. Christ himself has tattooed you,” he said during the live session, insisting that the scripture demonstrates that tattoos are not inherently sinful or forbidden for Christians.

Pastor Okonkwo dismissed common arguments drawn from the Book of Leviticus—often referenced by critics to condemn tattoos—describing such interpretations as misplaced and taken out of proper biblical context. He emphasized that he would not promote teachings he does not fully understand, pointing to his age, experience, and long-standing commitment to the Christian faith.

He further referenced the Book of Revelation, suggesting that it indicates Jesus bears inscriptions, and encouraged believers not to hide their convictions or personal expressions out of fear of public or religious criticism.

The comments quickly went viral, triggering mixed reactions among Christians and the wider public. While some praised the pastor for challenging long-held doctrines and offering what they described as a more contextual reading of scripture, others accused him of stretching biblical texts to justify personal choices.

The controversy has once again reignited a long-standing debate within the church over tattoos, personal expression, and the interpretation of scripture—highlighting the deep divisions that persist among believers on matters of doctrine and modern Christian living.
