“U.S. Condemns, Tinubu Directs, Killers Walk Free: Kwara Attack Rekindles National Anger”

By Passman Akpos

The United States Mission in Nigeria has condemned what it described as a “horrific attack” in Kwara State that reportedly claimed the lives of more than 160 people, with many others still unaccounted for.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the U.S. Mission expressed deep condolences to the families and communities affected by the violence and welcomed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive for the deployment of security forces to protect vulnerable villages. The Mission also commended the President’s instruction to federal and state authorities to provide humanitarian assistance and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

“The United States condemns the horrific attack in Kwara State in Nigeria, which claimed the lives of more than 160 people, with the death toll still unconfirmed and many still unaccounted for,” the statement read. “We express our deepest condolences to the families of those affected by this senseless violence.”

While many Nigerians welcomed the message of solidarity, the statement has also triggered intense public debate, with critics arguing that international condemnations and official directives have done little to halt Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

Some commentators on social media accused the U.S. statement of being vague for failing to clearly identify the victims of the attack, raising concerns about perceived selective empathy in international responses to violence in the country. Others argued that repeated condemnations without visible consequences for perpetrators have become routine and ineffective.

“Condemning the attack is not enough,” one commentator wrote. “Even while statements are being issued, killings continue. Nigerians are tired of daily bad news and can no longer sleep with both eyes closed.”

The Kwara killings have also reopened broader national conversations about insecurity, accountability, and the role of both Nigerian authorities and foreign partners. Some voices linked the situation to long-standing warnings by separatist figures, while others called on global allies to move beyond diplomatic language and support concrete security measures, including the use of drones and advanced surveillance technology.

There were also sharp criticisms of Nigeria’s political leadership, with citizens urging both local and international actors to “put leaders on their toes” to fulfil what many described as the government’s primary responsibility: protecting lives and property.

Amid the outrage, a separate viral video showing former U.S. President Donald Trump praising Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at a recent event in Washington added another layer to the online debate, with some Nigerians interpreting the moment as symbolic of elite diplomacy disconnected from the country’s grim security realities. Others dismissed the moment as sarcasm or political theatre.

Despite differing views, a recurring theme across reactions was the demand for swift, decisive action. Many Nigerians stressed that investigations into the Kwara attack must be thorough and transparent, and that justice must go beyond official statements and promises.

As condolences continue to pour in from abroad, the tragedy has once again underscored a growing public sentiment at home: that sympathy and directives, without measurable results on the ground, no longer reassure a population living in fear.
