Somalia joins UN Security Council for 2025-26

By Victor Akan

Somalia has officially taken its place on the United Nations Security Council as a non-permanent member for the 2025-2026 term. In a ceremony on Thursday, the East African nation joined Pakistan, Panama, Greece, and Denmark in assuming seats vacated by outgoing members Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland.

Elected by the UN General Assembly in June, Somalia secured 179 votes—well above the two-thirds threshold required for a seat. This marks a significant step for Somalia, which last held a Security Council position decades ago.

As a council member, Somalia will represent African interests while contributing to global discussions on peace and security. The Security Council, comprising 15 members, has five permanent members with veto power (China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US) and 10 non-permanent seats allocated by geographical region.

Somalia’s term runs from January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026. Alongside another African representative, it will help shape resolutions and mediate conflicts, focusing on issues that resonate deeply with the continent, including peacebuilding, counterterrorism, and sustainable development.

Somalia’s presence on the council signals an opportunity for the country to spotlight regional challenges and successes on a global stage. From addressing the impact of climate change to countering extremist threats, Somalia’s tenure is expected to amplify African priorities in the UN’s most powerful decision-making body.

With its seat at the table, Somalia steps into a pivotal role in influencing international policy and fostering collaboration on critical global challenges.\
