Trump urges Egypt, Jordan to provide shelter to Gaza refugees

US President Donald Trump has called on Egypt and Jordan to take in more Palestinian refugees from Gaza, describing the area as a “demolition site” amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Speaking to media persons aboard Air Force One on Saturday, Trump revealed that he had discussed the matter with King Abdullah II of Jordan, noting that the conversation had gone well.

“He’s a friend of mine. I know him very well. I’ve gotten along with him over the years very well. He’s done a wonderful job. He really houses, you know, millions of Palestinians, and he does it in a very humane way. I compliment him on that,” Trump said.

He continued, “I said to him, I’d love you to take on more (Palestinian people from Gaza). I’m looking at the whole Gaza Strip right now, and it’s a mess. I’d like him to take people. I’d like Egypt to take people.”

Trump added that he plans to speak with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi on Sunday.

“I’d like Egypt to take people. I’d like Jordan to take people. You’re talking about probably a million and a half people, and we just clean out that whole thing. Over the centuries, that says many, many conflicts inside. Something has to happen,” Trump remarked.

The US President painted a grim picture of the current state of Gaza.

“It is literally a demolition site right now, almost everything’s demolished, and people are dying there. I’d rather get involved with some of the Arab nations and build housing at a different location where they can maybe live in peace,” he said.

Trump suggested that the potential housing could be temporary or long-term.

The conflict between Israel and Hamas, which began on October 7, 2023, has caused severe devastation. Since the start of Israel’s military campaign, over 47,000 Palestinians have been killed, while more than 400 Israeli soldiers have also died in combat in Gaza.

In a separate development, Trump lifted the hold placed by the Biden administration on sending 2,000-pound bombs to Israel.

“A lot of things that were ordered and paid for by Israel, but have not been sent by Biden, are now on their way!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.

He confirmed that the bombs, which had been in storage, were released to Israel, as they had already been paid for and had been waiting for delivery for some time.

In May 2024, President Biden had frozen the delivery in an attempt to prevent Israeli forces from entering the southern Gaza city of Rafah.
