A fresh wave of controversy has emerged in the Niger Delta following remarks by prominent Ijaw leader Asari Dokubo, whose recent interview—circulated by Gbaramatu Voice—has sparked debate over fairness, representation, and security contracts in the region.
Netizen accused the platform of selectively presenting his views, alleging that key criticisms directed at influential figures such as Government Ekpemupolo (popularly known as Tompolo) and Matthew Tola were deliberately omitted. According to Netizen, the full context of his position raises serious concerns about the current structure of pipeline surveillance contracts.
At the heart of his argument is what he described as a “misplaced arrangement,” where individuals and entities are reportedly assigned contracts in areas outside their ancestral or regional jurisdictions. In a strongly worded caution, Dokubo highlighted the potential risks of sidelining influential regional stakeholders, including Ateke Tom, General Boyloaf, and Shoot-at-Sight, in discussions around decentralizing pipeline contracts. He warned that ignoring such voices could escalate tensions and destabilize the fragile peace in the region.
“These are not empty threats,” Dokubo reportedly stressed, framing his comments as an early warning signal rather than provocation. He cautioned that renewing pipeline contracts without inclusive consultation and equitable distribution could trigger unrest.
The development places renewed pressure on the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as key national institutions including the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Nigerian Senate, Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, and the Nigerian Air Force to ensure that decisions surrounding oil infrastructure security are handled with sensitivity and fairness.
