“Why Hide Your Past?” — Peter Obi Challenges Tinubu Over Foreign Court Records, Demands Transparency

Former Anambra State Governor and NDC presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reignited debate over President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s past, questioning the decision to seek the withholding of records from a foreign court.
Obi, in a statement reflecting on Nigeria’s political leadership, said he was deeply concerned that a sitting Nigerian president could be involved in legal efforts aimed at restricting access to records relating to issues of legitimate public interest.
According to him, leadership requires the courage to confront one’s history rather than shield controversial aspects of it from scrutiny.
“It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past, particularly records relating to matters of legitimate public interest,” Obi stated.
The former governor argued that political leaders should be willing to acknowledge mistakes, provide explanations where legitimate questions exist and apologise where necessary.
He maintained that accepting responsibility does not weaken leadership but can instead strengthen public confidence in those occupying positions of authority.
‘Nigerians Deserve Clear, Verifiable Answers’
Obi placed particular emphasis on questions surrounding educational credentials, arguing that issues concerning a political leader’s primary and secondary education should be addressed through credible explanations rather than primarily through legal proceedings.
“Issues surrounding foundational schooling — primary and secondary — should not remain unresolved or be addressed primarily through legal proceedings,” he said.
He stressed that Nigerians deserve “clear, credible, and verifiable explanations,” particularly where information concerning educational history has previously been submitted or made available.
The statement comes amid continuing public and legal interest surrounding records relating to Tinubu’s past and educational history.‘What Example Are We Setting For Young Nigerians?’
Obi said his greatest concern was not merely the controversy surrounding one individual, but the precedent being established for the country’s younger generation.
He pointed to Nigeria’s more than 200 million citizens and millions of young people currently in school, arguing that the Presidency should serve as an example of integrity, accountability, transparency and ethical leadership.
According to him, young Nigerians should not be taught that political power provides a shield against legitimate scrutiny.
The former presidential candidate further argued that having an imperfect past is part of being human, but that leaders must demonstrate the willingness to confront difficult questions with humility and honesty.
‘Nigeria Is Greater Than Any One Person’
Obi said political ambition is temporary, while the Nigerian state will endure beyond the tenure of any individual president.
“When will our political class fully appreciate that individual ambitions are temporary, while the nation endures?” he asked.
He added that the Presidency is an office held only for a season, but the moral standards established by those who occupy it could influence generations.
“Nigeria is greater than any one person, and the integrity of the Republic must always come before the interests of the individual,” Obi declared.
He concluded with his familiar call for national renewal:
“A New Nigeria is POssible.”
