APC’s Big Gamble: Fubara Cleared, Rivers Political War Intensifies

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reportedly cleared Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and 29 other sitting governors of the party as eligible aspirants to contest in the party’s governorship primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Party sources disclosed that Governor Fubara, alongside other prominent APC governors including Hope Uzodimma of Imo State, as well as former Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Sarafadeen Alli, successfully scaled through the party’s screening exercise.
According to insiders, a total of 30 APC governors were cleared as the ruling party intensifies internal preparations for the 2027 polls, signaling a strong push to consolidate its political dominance across key states.
The development comes amid reports of a flood of petitions currently delaying the final release of the comprehensive screening report. Despite this, the APC had earlier fixed Tuesday, May 13, for the publication of the official list of cleared aspirants, in compliance with timelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Sources revealed that the APC screened no fewer than 2,980 aspirants across multiple elective positions nationwide, including one presidential slot, 28 governorship positions, 109 Senatorial seats, 360 House of Representatives seats, and 991 State Assembly positions.
Governor Fubara’s clearance is being interpreted as a major political boost for the APC in Rivers State, especially following the prolonged political tensions arising from his fallout with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
His formal entry into the APC and subsequent clearance for the governorship primaries is widely seen as a major political realignment that could reshape the balance of power in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections.
Party insiders also noted that although the screening process has largely been successful, the APC leadership is carefully reviewing all petitions and complaints to ensure transparency, fairness, and internal party stability before making the final comprehensive list public.
As political stakeholders across the country monitor developments, further updates are expected in the coming days as the APC strengthens its structures and finalizes strategies for what is already shaping up to be a fiercely contested 2027 general election.
