Bayelsa state education fund, NGO inaugurate water project in school
The Bayelsa State Education Development Trust Fund (BYEDTF) has inaugurated a 9,000-litre water project at Comprehensive Secondary School, Toru Ndoro, in Ekeremor Local Government Area.
The water project implemented in collaboration with the Sustainable Partnership Initiative for Development (SPID) is part of efforts to improve schools and communities under the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) programme.
Dr Alice Atuwo, BYEDTF’s Executive Secretary, stated at the inauguration on Wednesday, that the project was the fund’s fourth intervention for public secondary schools in the state.
She said that BYEDTF had completed and handed over similar projects to secondary schools in Okutukutu, Tungbo, Sagbama and Kaima.
“This water project is more than just an infrastructure, it is a lifeline for our school and the community.
“The project is a source of potable water to our people in the face of prevailing health challenges.
“Our students will no longer go to the river to fetch water for drinking and to take care of their sanitary needs,” he said.
Also speaking, the Acting Board Chairman of BEDTF, Prof. Francis Sikoki, commended SPID for their support, and urged the leadership of Toru Ndoro community to safeguard the project.
Dr Weli Igiridi, the SPID Project Coordinator, said that BYEDTF and SPID were in a deliberate alliance to positively impact on rural schools.
“Our collaboration is focused on community impact, the water project will help to prevent outbreaks of cholera and other waterborne diseases,” Igiridi said.
Mr Felix Odubo, the National Chairman, Ndoro Urban Association, commended the fund and its partners for implementing the project.
He assured that the community would ensure good maintenance culture in the use of the facility.
The Principal of the school, Mrs Lillian Porri described the project as an answer to the school’s prayers.
Porri commended BYEDTF and SPID for the project, saying that it will significantly alleviate the challenges faced by students and staff in accessing safe water.
She urged the state government to quickly address the deteriorating state of the school building to avoid collapse.
