“Return the Money!” — Pressure Mounts on Sunday Obuseh Over Alleged N4.02 Million Transfer Scandal

Fresh controversy has erupted over an alleged wrongful retention of N4,020,000 mistakenly transferred to Mr. Sunday Obuseh, as concerned parties and the Cash Office, Apapa, have issued a public appeal urging him to return the outstanding balance in compliance with a court order.
According to the statement, the incident began in February 2026 when a business transaction reportedly went wrong after a contact who had Mr. Obuseh listed as a beneficiary in their banking app mistakenly transferred the sum of N4,020,000 meant for another business beneficiary into his account.
Sources disclosed that after repeated private appeals and interventions failed, the matter was taken to court. Following the legal process, Mr. Obuseh allegedly reversed only N2,030,000—about half of the disputed amount—while withholding the remaining balance.
The statement further alleged that since the partial refund, Mr. Obuseh blocked all attempts by the affected individual to reach him and ignored peace efforts initiated by intermediaries seeking an amicable resolution.
The victim of the mistaken transfer, identified as Akinleye Oluwashola Emmanuel, was said to have suffered severe professional consequences, including suspension from work, while his employment benefits were reportedly used to offset the financial losses resulting from the transaction.
Court documents from the Magistrate Court in Apapa revealed that the Chief Magistrate granted the application dated March 2, 2026, after noting that the respondents failed to file any counter affidavit.
Citing the legal principle that unchallenged affidavit evidence is deemed admitted, the court referenced Honda Place Ltd v. Globe Motors Holdings Nigeria Ltd (2005) 14 NWLR (Pt. 945) 273, affirming that uncontradicted depositions must be accepted as established facts.
The court subsequently ordered that the 2nd Respondent reverse the full sum of N4,020,000 erroneously transferred by the applicant back to his Guaranty Trust Bank account, account number 0108990529, without prejudice to bank charges.
Despite the ruling, the statement claims full compliance has not been achieved, prompting the unusual decision to make the issue public.
“It is ungodly to treat a fellow human this way. You can still retrace your steps,” the appeal stated, calling on Mr. Sunday Obuseh to refund the outstanding amount and resolve the matter peacefully.
The case has since sparked conversations on accountability, ethics, and the growing risks associated with digital banking transfer errors in Nigeria.
